Significance
A core-shell brush copolymer (5) was prepared from small molecule reactants through one-pot tandem synthesis. Ring-opening-metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of the exo-norbornene-functionalized reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) agent 3, followed by RAFT copolymerization of styrene (St) and maleic anhydride (MAn) provided polymer 4, which was characterized by NMR spectroscopy, DSC, and GPC. Hydrolyzing the MAn units in 4 into hydrophilic maleic acid units converted polymer 4 into target amphiphilic core-shell brush copolymer 5.
