Significance
Gold nanoclusters of <4 nm with a narrow size distribution were prepared and supported in thermosensitive vinyl ether star polymers obtained via living cationic polymerization of 2-(2-ethoxy)ethoxyethyl vinyl ether (EOEOVE). The star-polymer-supported gold nanoclusters were applied to the aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols and a primary aliphatic alcohol with KOH in water to give the corresponding carbonyl compounds in 71% to >99% yield. The star-polymer-supported gold catalyst was reused five times for the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol without any significant loss of catalytic activity.
