Significance
Anthracene and its derivatives are widely used in the field of organic materials chemistry as dyes, sensors, switches, and starting materials. The authors report a scalable method (10 gram scale and higher) for preparing anthracenes with functional handles (triflates) at 1- and 8-positions. They demonstrate that the two triflate moieties can be modified in sequence to yield orthogonally protected diacetylene.
