Significance
The authors synthesized a BODIPY-based fluorescent probe for hypochlorous acid 9 from p-methoxyphenol 1 and pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde 4. The fluorescence of 9 is quenched through a photo-electron-transfer (PET) process from the BODIPY to the p-methoxyphenyl moiety. Upon exposure to HOCl, 9 is transformed to its benzoquinoid analogue 10 in which no PET takes place resulting in a fluorescence response.
