Significance

1,3-Diketones are important synthetic intermediates, besides, some reveal useful biological activity. The direct Rh-catalyzed reductive acylation of enones solves the regioselectivity problem, encountered in conventional synthetic routes, and affords a simple approach to polysubstituted β-diketones, including polyarylated diketones. This is an interesting example of a selective α-functionalization of α,β-enones.
