Significance

A novel catalytic protocol for the heterogeneous benzylation and propargylation of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds is described. Thus, the alkylation of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds 1 with benzylic 2 and propargylic alcohols 3 was carried out in the presence of phosphomolybdic acid supported on silica gel (PMA/SiO2) to afford the corresponding 2-benzylic-1,3 dicarbonyl compounds 4 and 2-propargylic-1,3-dicarbonyl compounds 5, respectively. All the reactions were completed within 1.5-3.5 h at room temperature.
