Background

Corneal ulcers are responsible for approximately 2 million new cases of corneal blindness annually and they are a leading cause of ocular morbidity worldwide [1]. Microbial keratitis requires aggressive management to limit the disease process and thereby minimize future visual disability. The empirical use of broad-spectrum antibiotics is contributing to a rise in multidrug-resistant bacteria, threatening the future treatment options of infectious keratitis [2].
