Significance
Reported is a bifunctional molecule that can be used to enhance the mechanical properties of polylactide. It has a norbornene group and a lactide group, which can undergo ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and ring-opening polymerization (ROP), respectively. As an example, a polylactide-polybutadiene copolymer synthesized with this ”adduct" had a 65% elongation at its break point (5% for common polylactides) and a tensile toughness of 16 MJm-³ (2 MJm-³ for common polylactides).
