Significance

It is believed that the amount of thiol-containing amino acids in blood is related to several human diseases. The authors propose a squaraine based dye (1) to probe these molecules. Upon addition of the analyte to the squaraine core, extended π-conjugation between the two satellite conjugated molecules is broken, and fluorescence is detected in the visible range.
