Significance
The first synthesis of [9]-, [12]-, and [18]cycloparaphenylenes is reported. These novel compounds contain strained aromatic systems with radially oriented p-orbitals. Moreover, these compounds can be viewed as subunits of carbon nanotubes, and therefore represent a ”first step" towards fully synthetic carbon nanotubes.
