Significance

An intermolecular iron-catalyzed 1,4-addition reaction of α-olefins to 1,3-dienes is described. The regioselectivity and stereoselectivity of the addition are controlled and the targets are obtained in high yield using as low as 1 mol% of the iron(II) complex. The proposed catalytic cycle for the transformation is presented and is reported to be consistent with the outcomes of deuterium labeling experiments.
