Significance
Tin ion-exchanged montmorillonite (Sn-Mont) was prepared from commercially available Na-Mont. Sn-Mont catalyzed the cyanosilylation of sterically hindered ketones under heterogeneous conditions to give the corresponding cyanohydrin trimethylsilyl ethers in up to >98% yield (14 examples). The catalyst was readily removed from the reaction mixture by simple filtration and reused in at least three runs without significant loss of activity.
