Significance

A series of monomethine cyanine dyes containing an azaazulene moiety (AAZ1-4) was synthesized in moderate yields. Dyes AAZ1-4 display strong NIR absorption bands, with absorption maxima between 600 and 720 nm and absorption coefficients of 4-11 x 10-4 M-¹cm-¹.
