Significance
The three-component Mannich reaction is a useful one-pot procedure to obtain synthetically valuable β-amino carbonyl compounds. While procedures for this reaction are well known, typically the use of an organic solvent is necessary. In this study, with water as solvent, a boron chelate complex derived from simple boric acid and glycerol catalyzes the three-component Mannich reaction to provide products in high yields with modest syn selectivities.
