Sister Mary Joseph’s Nodule as Primary Localized Malignant Mesothelioma. Report of a Case

Introduction

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare neoplasm originating from the mesothelial surface of the serous body cavities including peritoneum. While 10 % of mesotheliomas are abdominal [1], only rarely do they involve the umbilicus. In most cases this is either due to metastatic disease or due to an umbilical hernia propagated by ascites and increased intrabdominal pressure in the course of diffuse malignant mesothelioma. To the best of our knowledge, there is only a single report in the literature of a primary localized malignant mesothelioma in the umbilical area [2]. Herein we report a case of such a ­tumor and its management.
