Significance

Herein, a direct oxygenation of allyl arenes and allyl alkenes is reported. This palladium(II)-catalyzed reaction proceeds under very mild conditions and exclusively affords (E)-alkenyl aldehydes in high yields. Hereby, the oxygen source is water and DDQ serves as the oxidizing agent.
