Significance
A new type of poly(phenylene-co-fluorene) bearing diarylanthracene or diaryltetracene groups has been synthesized by Suzuki polymerization. The pendant linear acenes react with singlet oxygen (¹O2) via the [4+2] cycloaddition reaction to give endoperoxides. The resulting quenching of the acene fluorescence has been used to detect ¹O2, which is one of the most important reactive oxygen species.
