Significance

The groups of Wulff and Maruoka independently report the catalytic asymmetric synthesis of trisubstituted aziridines using chiral Brønsted acid catalysts. Wulff’s aziridination was induced by Lewis acid assisted chiral Brønsted acid catalysts derived from VANOL 1a or VAPOL 1b. The Maruoka group used the strong chiral Brønsted acid catalyst 2. In both cases, the desired products were obtained in high diastereo- and enantioselectivities.
