Significance
Silica-bonded propylpiperazine-N-sulfamic acid (SBPPSA) was prepared according to eq. 1. SBPPSA catalyzed the four-component condensation of benzil, aromatic aldehydes, primary amines, and ammonium acetate under solvent-free conditions to give the corresponding 1,2,4,5-tetrasubstituted imidazoles 1 in 70-92% yield (eq. 2, 19 examples).
