Significance
Fesoterodine (Toviaz®) is a muscarinic antagonist prescribed for the treatment of overactive bladder. The key step in the synthesis depicted, a Friedel-Crafts alkylation of 4-hydroxy-methyl phenol (A) with cinnamaldehyde (B) mediated by N-methylpiperazine (C), has been accomplished on a 200 kg scale.
