Significance
The use of sulfonates as traceless linkers was demonstrated. Resin-bound biphenylsulfonates 3 were prepared from hydroxyethylmethyl resin 1 in two steps. The reactions of 3 with Grignard reagents were performed in the presence of a nickel catalyst to give unfunctionalized terphenyls in 55-66% yield (from 2, 8 examples).
