Synthesis of Tropenes by Pd-Catalyzed Double Hydroamination

Significance

The synthesis of tropenes by Pd- catalyzed double hydroamination of cyclohepta­triene in yields ranging from modest to excellent is reported. For the reactions involving anilines, a complicating feature is the production of an isomeric dihydroquinoline byproduct for which the mechanism has not been elucidated. Analogous reactions with benzylamines and β-phenethyl­amines have been achieved; however, reactions with simple aliphatic amines were not described.
