Significance

In the present paper, Wills et al. report a new catalyst for Rh-mediated asymmetric transfer hydrogenation in aqueous solution and formic acid/triethylamine. This catalyst is prepared using their previously developed tethered ligand (Org. Lett. 2005, 7, 5489-5491) with introduction of a core N-tosyl-1,2-diaminocyclohexane structure (K. Murata, T. Ikariya, R. Noyori J. Org. Chem. 1999, 64, 2186-2187). Improved stability as well as high catalytic activity (up to 0.01 mol%) were noted both in formic acid/triethylamine and in aqueous media.
