Significance
Soluble poly(p-phenylenevinylene)s (PPVs) are synthesized by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of a substituted cyclophanediene derivative. The polymerization proceeds in a living fashion. The resulting PPVs not only have controllable molecular weights and low polydispersities, but also bear an alternating cis-trans microstructure.
