Significance
The report illustrates another example of the versatile catalytic activity of the Cu(II)(Box) system. Synthetically useful chiral α-hydroxy ester building blocks 4 can be prepared with Hantzsch ester 3. Although they showed slightly reduced enantioselectivity, aliphatic α-keto esters were suitable substrates for the enantioselective reduction.
