Significance
An efficient heterogeneous aquacatalytic aerobic oxidation of alcohols was achieved with an amphiphilic polystyrene-poly(ethylene glycol) (PS-PEG) resin-supported nanoplatinum catalyst. The amphiphilic resin dispersion of particles of platinum (ARP-Pt) catalyzed aerobic oxidation of primary and secondary benzylic, allylic, aliphatic, and alicyclic alcohols in water at 60 °C to afford the corresponding carboxylic acids and ketones in 80-99% yield (15 examples). The oxidation proceeded also under air. ARP-Pt catalyst was recovered by simple filtration and reused several times without any loss of catalytic activity.
