Significance

Described in this report is a novel type of platinum-catalyzed cyclization of alkynes that proceeds highly regioselectively to give bicyclic spiro ketones. The importance of this report is the observation of highly selective hydration of the PhC≡CPh bond over PhC≡CMe, which has not been reported so far and is contrary to the ones reported.
