Significance

The palladium(II)-catalyzed annulation of internal alkynes with ortho-ester-containing phenylboronic acids or esters offers a novel preparative access to 2,3-disubstituted indenones and 3,4-disubstituted 2-naphthols. These annulation reactions represent the first example of an intramolecular nucleophilic addition of an organopalladium(II) species to an alkoxycarbonyl group.
