Significance

In connection with their recent report on using dicarbonyl compounds in cross-[4+2] annulation with 2-alkynylbenzaldehyde (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2008, 47, 5820, Synfacts 2008, 1062), the Tanaka group also succeeded in using acyl phosphonates as substrates. Nearly enantiopure benzopyranones with the phosphonate-substituted quaternary carbon center are obtained in good to moderate yields.
