Significance

A novel Pd-catalyzed alkene dioxygenation is presented as an alternative to the popular Os-catalyzed Sharpless dihydroxylation. The catalyst choice is crucial due to its electron-rich ligand and non-coordinating counterions. The scope is broad and includes both inter- and intramolecular examples, however, the dr values for the latter case are lower.
