Summary

Our data indicate that in vivo insulin resistance in non-diabetic Pima Indians is associated with a decreased ability for immunocaptured skeletal muscle insulin receptors to au-tophosphorylate in vitro. In addition, although increasing obesity in these subjects was associated with both decreased insulin action and insulin receptor tyrosine kinase activation, there was still a significant correlation between insulin receptor activation and Mlow independent of % fat. This suggests that the intrinsic insulin resistance of Pima Indians not attributable to obesity is also associated with defects in insulin receptor function.
