New processes based on an arene-catalyzed lithiation reaction include the fluorine-lithium exchange, the synthesis of cyclic polyethers, the structural modification of natural products such as carbohydrates or steroids, the generation of different functionalized organometallic intermediates by lithium-metal (copper, titanium) transmetallation, and the activation of nickel in order to get a simple methodology which allows the hydrogenation of different organic substrates without using molecular hydrogen. The synthetic applications of the developed methodology in all these reactions are emphasized along this account.
