ABSTRACT

Everyday use of facial expressions plays an integral part in conveying messages and feelings to those around us. As aesthetic surgeons we must pay particular attention to this. Aesthetic surgical procedures that specifically alter the patient's appearance should only be performed when the benefits markedly outweigh the possible drawbacks and complications. This is particularly true when a well-proven and accepted technique such as a coronal brow lift has been performed successfully since its original description in 1926 by Hunt.1 Unless we can promise our patients that results of a new technique will provide the same or better effect than that obtained with a standard, wellproven technique and deliver, on that promise, we must refrain from using it. Ideally, a new technique should also shorten the surgical time, decrease trauma to the tissues, reduce the expense of the procedure, and certainly make the postoperative recovery easier for the patient.

We have incorporated the use of the endoscope in aesthetic surgery of the face and body at our institution since 1993 with excellent results. Because the endoscopic set-up has become much more compact, less expensive, and simple to operate, it is optimal for use in both a hospital and an office-based surgical facility.
