Significance

The first use of polystyrene supported-poly-(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers as heterogeneous organocatalysts for C-C bond formation is described. Knoevenagel condensation of benzaldehyde (5 mmol) with malononitrile (5 mmol) was catalyzed by polystyrene-supported 1st-3rd generation PAMAM dendrimers (G1-G3PAMAM on PS) to give benzylidene malononitrile (G1PAMAM on PS: 42% yield, 60 min; G2: 91%, 60 min; G3: 100%, 15 min). Thirty examples of Knoevenagel condensations were performed by using 5 mol% of G3PAMNAM on PS 1 (95-100% isolated yield).
