Significance

Amphiphilic block copolymer-stabilized gold nanoparticles (Au-sol) were prepared by the reduction of HAuCl4 in an aqueous solution of P123 (EO20PO70EO20) using NaBH4. The gold nanoparticles catalyzed the oxidation of various alcohols in aqueous solution under O2 to give the corresponding oxidized products in 27-100% conversions (7 examples). TEM analysis showed that the nanoparticles were enlarged after the reaction. In the first reusing run of the catalyst, the conversion for the oxidation of cyclooctanol decreased to 72%.
