Significance

The superacid polymerization of electron-rich aromatic monomers, such as terphenyl, with pentafluorobenzaldehyde is reported. Polymer 1, and the other polymers prepared, can be easily functionalized by the displacement of a fluoride from the pentafluorophenyl groups via a SNAr reaction. The quantitative addition of sodium 4-hydroxybenzenesulfonate to polymer 1 to form polymer 2 is a demonstration of this capability.
