Significance
In pioneering work, Rychnovsky et al. (J. Org. Chem. 1996, 61, 1194) reported the oxidative kinetic resolution (OKR) of secondary alcohols using a nitroxyl catalyst. Since this achievement, this field has undergone significant development. In the present report the authors report the OKR of racemic benzoins using a cobalt-based catalyst to give the chiral α-hydroxy ketones in good yields and enantioselectivities.
