Significance
Oseltamvir (Tamiflu) is the prime drug for the treatment of avian H1N1 influenza. Syntheses of oseltamivir starting with enzymatic dihydroxylation of bromobenzene were reported in 2008 by the groups of Hudlicky, Fang, and Banwell. By starting with ethyl benzoate, the synthesis depicted avoids a palladium-catalyzed carbonylation to install the ester function.
