Significance

Cp2ZrBu2 is shown to react with two equivalents of TMS-substituted alkyne affording 2,5-bis(trimethylsilyl)-zirconacyclopentadienes. The latter then react in a Cu-mediated cycloaddition to disubstituted alkynes, giving rise with 1,2,4,5-tetrasubstituted benzene derivatives. Ester moieties are tolerated by the reaction conditions, and the yields of tetrasubstituted benzene are high.
