Significance

The authors describe a selective synthesis of the macrocyclic compound [12]cycloparaphenylene. The authors recognized that the strain energy of the resulting nanohoop (55 kcal mol-¹) would preclude a macrocyclization route using oligoparaphenylene. Instead, the cyclization is carried out using cyclohexane derivatives as templates.
