Significance
The authors present a highly efficient method for the one-carbon homologation of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes bearing acid-resistant functional groups. A Peterson olefination converts the aldehyde substrate into an α-phos-phonoenamine, which is subsequently hydrolyzed by aqueous hydrobromic acid yielding the free homologated carboxylic acid.
