Significance

This paper describes a hafnium BINOL catalyzed asymmetric Friedel-Crafts alkylation on the C3 of indoles. Various (E)-1,4-diaryl- 2-butene-1,4-diones were used as electrophiles. 1,4-Dicarbonyl products with one stereocenter were generated in high yields and high enantio­selectivities.
