Significance

Most current synthetic methods in this area employ harsh conditions, such as high temperatures and strongly acidic or basic reaction conditions. Other methods involve the reduction of acridones, the synthesis of which also requires harsh conditions. This is the first synthesis that utilizes mild conditions to bring about the [4+2] annulation of substituted acridines.
