Significance
Ionic salts incorporating anions formed from pristine C60 have shown improved electrical and magnetic properties. However, their further design into useful materials has been hindered by the general instability of such potent electron acceptors. Hence, the remarkable stability of the [C60(CN)5]- anion opens opportunities for the design of various air-stable salts that could potentially incorporate various electron-rich cations. This process could lead to the revelation of valuable magnetic or electronic properties that could find wide application in the field of material science.
