Significance

Disubstituted C60-fused γ-lactones can be obtained via metal salt mediated reactions of fullerene with different malonate esters in fairly good yields. The products were characterized by UV/Vis, HRMS, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, and FT-IR spectroscopy. A reaction mechanism is proposed.
