Abstract
A cerium(IV) sulfate tetrahydrate promoted oxidative cyclization of quinones with olefins is developed. It proceeds through a tandem [3+2]-cyclization–oxidative coupling–[3+2]-cyclization process, in which tetrahydrobenzodifurans were conveniently constructed in high yields. Moreover, this method exhibits a good functional-group tolerance and scalability.

- 8 To a reaction tube was added 32.4 mg (0.3 mmol) of BQ. Then 363.9 mg (0.9 mmol) of Ce(SO4)2·4H2O and 216.7 mg (1.8 mmol) of MgSO4 were added. After addition of 3 mL toluene, 521.1 mg (2.1 mmol) of tert-butyl-(4-isopropenylphenoxy)dimethylsilane was also added. The reaction mixture was then stirred for 24 h at r.t. When the reaction was finished the reaction mixture was filtered using a sand-core funnel. The pure product was obtained by flash column chromatography on silica gel (PE and EtOAc). A 49% isolated yield was obtained. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ = 7.31–7.27 (m, 4 H), 6.79–6.76 (m, 4 H), 6.63 (s, 2 H), 3.37–3.21 (m, 4 H), 1.73 (s, 6 H), 0.96 (s, 18 H), 0.17 (s, 12 H) ppm. 13C NMR (100 MHz, CDCl3): δ = 154.67, 153.07, 139.81, 125.78, 123.41, 119.82, 106.24, 89.11, 45.39, 29.24, 25.82, 18.30, –4.27 ppm.
