Significance
The first synthesis of 5-carboxy-3-pyrrolinones by Fe(II)-mediated carbonylative cyclization of ynones in water is reported. Fe(CN)4(CO)2]2-, formed in situ from K4Fe(CN)6, CO and the CN- ion, is proposed as an active precursor. The mechanism as shown, proceeding via β-cyanoenones followed by hydrolysis and cyclization, is suggested with evidence.
