Significance

The reaction represents an easy way for the reduction of various alkenes, including tetrasubstituted derivatives, which are usually resistant to hydrogenolysis. Since hydroboration of alkenes requires rather mild conditions, it may be the method of choice for the reduction of polysubstituted alkenes to alkanes.
