Significance
Dictyodendrin B, a very scarce alkaloid isolated from the sponge Dictyodendrilla verongiformis, totally inhibits telomerase at a concentration of 50 µg/mL. Telomerase is overexpressed in >85% of all malignant cells and is therefore a target for chemotherapy. The concise synthesis by Fürstner and co-workers is a splendid exercise in heteroannulation techniques. For a synthesis of the related natural product Ningalin B see: A. Hamasaki, J. M. Zimpleman, I.
