Significance

Irciniastatin A and Psymberin were isolated independently by the groups of Pettit and Crews in 2004 from the sponges Ircinia ramose and Psammocinia sp., respectively. This synthesis established the stereochemistry at C4 and C8, left unresolved at the time of isolation, and showed that Psymberin and Irciniastatin A are identical. Psymberin/Irciniastatin A is a very potent antitumor agent.
